Christmas on the beaches is a fun-filled, sun-tanned experience. Whether you’re playing beach cricket, walking Elvina Ave to watch the lights, or joining the locals in the annual Christmas Day ‘Floatilla’, there will be something for you.

Below find a locals guide to the best activities for the festive season, ranging from the family friendly to the night time classics.

Local Excitement:

Christmas in Palmy is all about the beach, with many locals finding sand in their hair till the new year. It’s the perfect spot for families wishing to celebrate a warm December. This time of year the water is cool, with a King tide often landing around Christmas that makes beach visits extra wet and wild, something locals love but could give less confident swimmers a scare.

If you’re interested in hitting the waves Christmas Day, swimming between the flags would be your best bet, but if you’re more of a land dweller, the vast expanse of Palmy is perfect for beach cricket or a friendly game of footy.

Whale Beach is much the same, with the beach a less popular destination, making it perfect for romantic picnics and sunset walks- overall a more intimate scene.

Avalon is where the Christmas magic really happens, with events and local cheer in every establishment. The Floatilla is a favourite local tradition, with Avalonians young and old taking to the sea in an array of colorful inflatables, tumbling in the washing machine that is the King Tide Christmas morning. I’d recommend this tradition for the more confident sea farers among you.

Besides the ocean-orientated traditions, Avalon has an array of other charms for visitors to partake in. Elvina Avenue is a local hotspot, with the whole street lit every night, and families often waiting till the 24th to cruise the road in their best pajamas. A lovely way to make the magic come alive for the littlies. Carols on the Green at the Avalon Bowlo is a similar event for families, complete with a Santa and live music, replacing the much beloved Carols by the Sea.

Beyond the Beaches:

For a night on the town, Darling Harbor’s Christmas itinerary is bursting with events. Though these locations are a fair stones throw from the haven of Palmy, for the intrepid urban adventurer or parents seeking to entertain their kids, Sydney is a festive playground come December.
